Supporting wellbeing

If anyone is in immediate danger call the emergency services on 999.

To check the latest flood situation, or get advice in England, Scotland or Wales call Floodline on 0345 988 1188, in Northern Ireland call 0300 2000 100 to report flooding.

Approaches to managing flood incidents differ within the UK. Commonly in England and Wales, the emergency services, local authority flood management departments (typically within County Councils and Unitary Authorities) and the Environment Agency or Natural Resources Wales will be actively involved in managing flooding incidents.

In Scotland, the emergency services, local authority flood management departments and SEPA will be actively involved. In Northern Ireland, similarly the emergency services, local authorities and the Department for Infrastructure will be involved.

It is possible that support will also be provided by those that manage infrastructure that manage drainage and watercourses including highway authorities, water companies and internal drainage board.

Local support may be available before, during and after a flood. It may be helpful to contact your local authority or the National Flood Forum and Scottish Flood Forum.

Getting involved

Flooding can be traumatic, stressful and tiring – for some people it can feel like a bereavement. It’s important to consider the impact of flooding on people’s mental wellbeing. Those that have been flooded are likely to be distressed, exhausted and potentially angry. Professionals should be patient and understanding. Sometimes it may be necessary to double check instructions.

Overcoming the impacts of flooding, or concern about the likelihood of flooding can be distressing and cause anxiety for those involved. It is normal for someone to feel this way, even some time after the event. If someone is feeling low, stressed or anxious, encourage them to speak to their GP, neighbours, local community support groups, friends and family.

Organisations like the National Flood Forum, Scottish Flood Forum, the Samaritans, Mind and Shout 85258 can also provide help. It may also be helpful to consider charities offering support for post-traumatic stress (PTSDUK) and

Gov.UK has provided guidance for frontline responders. There is also guidance for homeowners on cleaning up.
